GPS For Cars – A Forum Review
Don’t Waste Your Time
If you are looking for these new GPS for cars, I would not waste your time reading articles and news stories on the web. GPS systems are the kind of thing that you need to go into a shop and speak to a sales representative first, then once you know the make and model you need, and which will fit your usage requirements, go online and find a good deal.
Of course the main manafacturers have good information, but only on their own models so you would have to go to at least the top three Garmin, TomTom and Magellan to compare the different features of each model in their range.
Forum Links
So, here’s what I am going to do. I am going to point you to a few forums where you can find the information you need from the people who are actually using GPS for cars. Each of the links on this page will open in a new browser tab/window so that this article stays in the background for when you need to click on the links to the other forums.
Your Questions Answered
Once you are on the forums you can search for the answers to any questions you might have and hopefully this will give you some idea as to which make and model you need. Some of the guys there are very knowledgable and they can probably answer most queries, but you need to use a forum which is active otherwise you will be unlikely to get a quick reply.
GPS Underground Forum This forum is probably the most active of the bunch on the first page of Google, and has sections for TomTom, Garmin, Navigon, but strangely not Magellan. Instead it has a setion for iGo, MioMap, and other. When I visited it, there were 15-30 people viewing each of the main sections which indicates a good active membership of this forum. One thing I did not like was that the site continually asked me to register and wanted to redirect me to a register screen each time I clicked on a forum. However, the activity means that this forum is worth visiting and is a useful GPS for cars resource.
GPS Review Forum This forum has fewer numbers of active members contributing, but still offers some very useful information for those searching for gps for cars in particular. Good active membership with many posts for today and yesterday meaning that your questions have a good chance of being answered. Not only does this website have forums for the three main manafacturers (Garmin, TomTom, Magellan, with sub-forums dealing with the different lines each carry), but it also has general category forum for GPS systems (which has a good recommendations section) and a forum for other less-well-known makes such as Navigon and Dash, etc.
GPS Discussion Forum This website is not particularly busy with only the general discussion and Garmin forums being used much. Unless you have questions centering around Garmin products, you may be better off asking your questions on another forum as there are quite a few unanswered questions lying about in other forums . This site is a more general one with forums discussing issues and questions on product offerings by the main 3 players in the GPS industry plus Navigon. Clear uncluttered forum list screen.
GPS City Forum This forum currently has nearly 7500 members and does not have a particularly active membership as some of the ‘last post’ dates are 2007/8, although there may still be some useful information there if you cannot find the answer to your questions on a more active set of forums. It has sections for Garmin, Magellan, and also one for Lowrance products too. There is a For Sale section where members can sell their own GPS for cars and handheld units and a discussion section dedicated to WAAS and DGPS if you have queries relating to these areas.
Groundspeak Geocaching Forum
A website consisting of forums mainly for geocaching with 3.5M posts and nearly 500,000 members. Sections on geocaching by country, and for the USA, by region and/or state, and special sections for geocaching advertures, hitchhikers, on waymarking and wherigo. GPS related topics forum includes GPS and technology, GPS in education, GPS in ham radio and other related subjects. Not really a site for GPS for cars but still probably the best for geocaching if you are interested in that.
Lastly… Not a Forum at All
News Reviews, and Information on GPS This is a site which offers latest industry news and relevant topics of interest. So it is not a forum as such, however, it is included here because it is useful to find out what is going on and gives a peek at the latest models being launched. As the website says, this is obviously a site for those passionate about all things GPS.
I hope this quick overview of the top forums for GPS for cars, such as the Garmin Nuvi 855 GPS Navigation System with voice input recognition has provided a useful guide to where you can find more information on the GPS system you require.
